Rubix Support’s Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) practitioners work collaboratively with people, their families and their wider support networks. Together, they deliver evidence-based assessments and develop practical strategies that prioritise safety, human rights, skill development and quality of life.

Our goal is to create meaningful and lasting change. Specifically, we focus on people who display Behaviours of Concern or other complex presentations — not just manage behaviour in the short term. As a result, our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Melbourne service is built around understanding the person first. We then build strategies that genuinely work in their everyday life.

What Is Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based, rights-focused and person-centred approach. It helps practitioners understand and respond to behaviours of concern in people with disability. Rather than focusing solely on stopping a behaviour, PBS looks at the reasons behind it. For example, unmet needs, communication challenges, environmental triggers or skill gaps all play a role. Because of this, practitioners develop proactive strategies to address those root causes directly.

The NDIS funds PBS under the Capacity Building — Improved Relationships budget. Furthermore, it must be delivered by a registered Behaviour Support Practitioner. Rubix Support is a registered NDIS provider. Consequently, our practitioners are assessed as suitable by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission to develop Behaviour Support Plans, including plans involving regulated restrictive practices.

Our Multidisciplinary PBS Team

What sets Rubix Support’s Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Melbourne service apart is the depth and diversity of our clinical team. Our practitioners come from a broad range of professional backgrounds. These include social work, developmental education, psychology and allied health — drawing on expertise across multiple disciplines.

Our clinical leads bring several decades of combined experience in the behaviour support field. Furthermore, our team operates as a genuine unit rather than a collection of individual practitioners. As a result, when you work with Rubix Support, you are not just supported by one practitioner. Instead, you have the knowledge, strength and care of our entire clinical team behind you.

We carefully match practitioners to participants based on individual needs, preferences and background. This is because the right relationship is a core part of what makes PBS work.

  • Develop proactive, safe strategies that respect rights and work to reduce and eliminate Restrictive Practices (RPs)

Frequently Asked Questions
About Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) in Melbourne

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based, person-centred approach to understanding and responding to behaviours of concern in people with disability. Rather than reacting to behaviour, PBS looks at the reasons behind it. For example, unmet needs, environmental triggers or communication challenges all drive behaviour. As a result, practitioners develop proactive strategies to address those root causes. A registered Behaviour Support Practitioner first conducts a Functional Behaviour Assessment. They then develop a personalised Behaviour Support Plan with strategies for the participant and their support network.

Yes. The NDIS funds Positive Behaviour Support under the Capacity Building — Improved Relationships budget in your plan. Furthermore, it must be delivered by a practitioner registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. If PBS is not currently in your plan, our team can conduct a Behaviour Support Needs Assessment. This assessment then supports a funding request at your next plan review.

A Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) is a personalised, NDIS-compliant document. It outlines evidence-based strategies for reducing behaviours of concern and improving quality of life. If the person you support displays behaviours that impact safety, participation or wellbeing, a BSP is required. This is also the case if regulated Restrictive Practices are currently in use. Rubix Support’s practitioners are qualified and registered to develop both Interim and Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plans.

Restrictive Practices are regulated interventions that restrict the rights or freedom of a person with disability. The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission recognises five types: seclusion, chemical restraint, mechanical restraint, physical restraint and environmental restraint. Any Behaviour Support Plan involving a Restrictive Practice must be developed by a registered practitioner and authorised appropriately. Furthermore, Rubix Support’s PBS practitioners include Restrictive Practice reduction and elimination strategies within every relevant plan. As a result, the goal is always to reduce reliance on these practices over time.

Rubix Support’s PBS Melbourne service is delivered by a genuinely multidisciplinary team. This includes practitioners from social work, developmental education, psychology and allied health backgrounds. Moreover, our clinical leads bring several decades of combined experience in behaviour support. Unlike standalone PBS-only providers, Rubix Support also delivers SIL, Lifestyle Support, SRE and Support Coordination. Consequently, PBS strategies are implemented consistently across all areas of a person’s life by people who already know them.

Yes. Rubix Support provides external Consultation and PBS Training to disability support organisations, education settings and child protection services. As a result, teams develop the knowledge and confidence to understand and implement Positive Behaviour Support strategies effectively. Furthermore, this training draws on the same clinical expertise our practitioners bring to every participant program. Visit our Training and Development page to learn more.
